I have an idea for a new product (if any manufacturer representatives visit this board):
People that have cases with many fans traditionally don't worry too much about noise. The thing is, though, some people have cases with many fans and wish they could have less noise while they're at it. What I'm proposing is a programmable fan thermostat which connects to a USB port in the rear of the computer for programming by software, and then slides into a 5.25" drive bay and controls 4 fans (or any number) and hooks up to a thermo-sensor mounted with adhesive to the top of the case. A digital display shows case temperature and fan status. 4 arrow keys, an OK key, and a Cancel key allow navigation to select between 10 different programs, or view individual fan RPMs for those which are connected to 3-pin connectors.
A sample program sheme may look like this:
When case temperature is below 80 degrees F:
All the case fans are turned off except for the one on the hard drives
When case temperature reaches 80 degrees F:
All the case fans start and cool the system back down to 80 degrees F
or:
When case temperature is at 72 degrees F: No case fans running
When case temperature is at 78 degrees F: Case fans run on +5v
When case temperature is at 80 degrees F: Case fans run on +7v
When case temperature is at 84 degrees F: Case fans run at full speed
Soft Start and Pure Thermal Control fan throttling
Soft Start: Fan rotation begins gradually
Pure Thermal Control fan throttling: fans operate just like thermistor-controlled thermal fans
If Vantec or Zalman or Antec or anybody came out with a product like this, I would buy it.
