I got this card for a build I made for my cousin. I knew I was in deep when I located where all the sound was coming from the build... THIS CARD
It is louder than an antec psu+ stock E21xx series fan, 80mm fan, and 120mm fan combined (all @ 100% for record). For some reason this is rated highly on newegg- and for some reason I really am not sure of. Granted it has some good clocks- I believe it is the highest factory-clocked 8600gt out there. And it was to be had with rebate for under $100 USD.
But why sell such an "extreme" product, designated by three X's, and then include a 2-wire fan with no control?
It runs at 100% all the time! Ntune does not change it, nor does atitool, rivatuner, or ANYTHING. Because there is no voltage regulation on this card for the fan, and two wires means it doesn't have PWM control. I even tried unhooking the wire and connecting it to the fan header at the rear of the mobo, but unfortunately on the GA-P35-D3SL, I can't seem to get that header to exact control of the rear 120mm fan connected to it in the first place...
When I presented the computer to my cousin, I was on the verge of shame. I make really good budget builds- all with high-quality parts, and I fine tune all the overclocking, and cooling of components to deliver the balance of speed and noise people need. Her last and only computer was a store-built Slot-P2 with a screaming <120mm fan (60 or 80 maybe?).
When she was listening to it, she ended up saying "well I think it's a bit quieter than my computer now." I literally turned red. After building her an awesome computer I felt like it was all reduced to nothing over a lousy card, and she knew how I felt, because she was consoling me!
BUT THE RABBIT-HOLE GOES DEEPER! While looking for a replacement card, I looked at my previous purchases and RMA's on newegg, and all of a sudden, some terrible suppressed memory came back and hit me like a ton of bricks:
For my current Athlon X2 computer I use as my mainstay, I had bought a 7600gt, the older brother to today's 8600gt's (or should I say gs's?).
I had purchased an XFX 7600gt (the one with a black aluminum worthless-heatspreader to move heat to the side and over the card (I completely forgot all of this before pouring over previous purchases). I then remembered that it was very loud, and idled in the 70's with a load temp on a hot day over 100 degrees (STOCK). I then remembered calling XFX support and wondering if my first computer I've built fully was going to auto-ignite to have some ass telling me that it's max temperature is 115 degrees- some ways away from my current loading temperatures.
So glad to hear that my computer now actually does have the ability to make breakfast for me! Too bad the mutt-covered package didn't include a single egg-poaching kit for the water I can boil on top of it. I suppose that useless black fin could be used to spread seering-hot melted butter on some toast turned crispy brown from the heat the fan blew. At least the sound would keep my dog away from my new brunch-machine.
Wow! Anyhow- feeling as if I was knee-deep in the worst trip of my life, I then went to the purchase list on newegg to see the card I now have- my EVGA 7600GT. Which is the highest rated card on newegg. Better yet, mine is the same card, but with dual-dvi and the edition is KO. In comparison to the butter-knived XFX card, it should have been called the TKO...
I decided to go with my card's little bro' the EVGA 8600GT. And to my delight, the only reviews concerning the fan mentioned how inaudible it was.
So I have this to say in conclusion: Thanks alot XFX. You managed to make me feel completely embarrassed in front of family over something I built with my own two hands. You've managed to smite my computing experience not once, but twice! I'd say fool me once....fool me twice... etc etc. But truth be told- at two two X's, one short of your Damien-like evil XXX, I'm not getting a third mutt to send back to the pound again!
Guess Bob Barker was on to something all these years.....
