Distributed Science Newsletter
May 2001
Dear ProcessTree Network suppliers,
It is with sadness that I have to announce that this will be the last newsletter you receive from Distributed Science, Inc.
Unfortunately the current situation in the financial markets, especially the venture capital market, is governed by a cautiousness that made it impossible for us to raise additional funding to continue our operation in a timely fashion. In other words, we are forced to shut down the company, lay off all employees and sell the assets we have created since our humble beginnings in 1999.
That, however, is secondary to the idea we were all committed to: To provide cheap, massive computing power for science and product development. And that idea was largely carried by the partnership between us as the technology providers and project managers and you as the suppliers of the raw computing power.
We don?t want to squander away either, just because we cannot walk the way together anymore. We are in talks with several companies who are interested in our technology as well as the supplier network, for the purpose of future distributed computing projects and real-time quality-of-service measurements.
We will diligently negotiate the sale of the supplier database, with emphasis on the privacy policy under which you signed up. As soon as we came to a result, the new owners will be informing you about any changes they might plan, including an opt-out for those concerned about their privacy under new management.
In closing we would like to thank everyone involved for their patience and dedication to this pioneering business and industry. We feel this is a technology that will have an impact on the future of mankind that cannot be estimated yet and we are proud that we were the guys that brought it to the commercial launch pad and pioneered so many of the early milestones. But just as the engineers stayed behind on Apollo 11, it would seem that we?re not going to set foot on the moon.
Be well all and good computing,
Armin Lenz, Steve Porter, Chris Harrison, Harris Hall and Jim Albea
