Processors capable of running HTPC's.

So far, my plan is to build an ITX-based HTPC with an All-In-Wonder 9100 (PCI) for video processing, and an Audigy 2 for audio, an undetermined high-capacity hard drive for storage, and a Sony DW-U10A drive to read/write on all known formats for TV shows and other media I plan to record. All I need is to choose the core that's going to run this project.

Now I know there's a P4-based ITX board, which is my leading candidate, and I know Commel intends to release (eventually) an Athlon ITX board, but there's also the super quiet VIA 1GHz Nehemiah to consider.

Obviously the P4's and Athlons have the juice for the job. But what about the VIA? I intend to encode MPEG video, do real time recordings of TV shows and write them to DVD or VCD - in other words, I'm using this box as a DVD player, VCR, and receiver. I've heard the earlier versions of the VIA embedded processors had troubles running DVD's, which doesn't sound too promising. But that was without the aid of Radeon, which has MPEG decoding capabilities on-board.

Since the system will be running much of the time, heat may be an issue. But then, so is power. It needs to have enough to do the job under Windows XP and start up in an acceptable timeframe.

I've got a 1.33 ghz athlon (not xp) in mine and it does dvd playback and divx recording just fine. You could probably get away with using an old 1.4 ghz p4, as long as you're not trying to play ut2003 or something...

I wouldn't use the via. I think even the new Nehemiah is still creamed by an old P3.

edit: I'm not sure how the nehemiah is cooled, so it might be quieter. On the other hand, if you used a 1.4 ghz p4, you could probably also take switch the fan with a stealth fan or something and it would be just as quiet... My 1.33 athlon is cooled by a 60mm vantec stealth, and I don't have heat problems.

^ That's along the lines of what I'm planning. Thanks for the heads up on the real-time MPEG encoding requirement, I wasn't aware of the necessity of such a fast processor.

For a little extra breathing room, though, I'm probably going to go with a 1.8GHz part. Titannotebook.com sells them (or will, shortly), and it shouldn't add much in the way of heat but will provide me with a lot more peace of mind. I haven't yet decided on a heatsink, but whatever I pick can't be much more than 2 inches tall in order to fit in one of these. I don't think it'll be a problem - the problem will be finding something nice and quiet.

The biggest problem it looks like I'll be facing is finding a US reseller of those Commell P4 ITX boards.
