processor upgrade in a thinkpad t20

I just got a thinkpad on ebay for a reasonable sum. I was thinking about swapping out
the 700mhz processor that is in it with whatever the fastest is that the chipset/laptop can
handle. Just wondering if anyone knew right off the top of their head. Also are there any
other technical modifications that I can do, new video card perhaps ?

Sorry, but I guess you're out of luck replacing either. AFAIK, the T2x-series have solded both CPU and GPU. You can, however replace the HD, dhe CD/DVD-drive and memory easily, with some skill you can also change the screen, there are some graphic-chipsets in T2x that support up to 1400*1050.
Notice: Don't try changing the screen if you are not shure if your GPU supports the new resolution. if you decide to do, be very careful with the screens, the have some really nasty wires.
However, maybe I'm wrong about your T20, I own a T23 and exchanged the screen, also, I've never encountered a T2x with exchangeable CPU or GPU, but, woh knows...

I did some more checking and found that thread which says the cpu is
in a micro ziff socket. I'll give it a look when my laptop comes in. As
for the video chip, if its part of the mobo there's probably no changing that,
unless i there's a drop in replacement for the s3 chip, i'm lucky in that
i have the equipment to desolder ic's so i'll have to do some hunting for
specs. The lcd screen swap sounds like a really good idea, but the t23 screens
are ~240 on ebay so that my prove prohibitively expensive.
