Processor upgrade, Athlon 1.1 or Duron 1.3??

My motherboard is limited to 200MHz FSB, FIC AZ11E, KT-133, so which processor would be the better choice here? Newegg has the Athlon for $35 and the Duron for $39. I know I can't and shouldn't go by clock speed alone... It looks like the Duron dissipates less power than the Athlon, the Athlon has more L2... How about overclockabilty? This isn't a major concern, but I like to tinker if I have the ability. I know you can get cheap Athlon XPs now but I've decided I don't want to upgrade the mobo yet.

TIA!!

The Duron 1.3ghz would be the better choice for your motherboard, I used to run a 1.1ghz Duron which was a great overclocker and very stable too.

A tough call. The morgan core duron is an upgrade to the original Athlon core. Plus, with the 1.3 duron, you already have the knowledge that the cpu is going to overclock, if that is something that interests you.

Does the motherboard support multiplier change? If so, at 200Mhz FSB, you could still get more Mhz out of your CPU by adjusting the multiplier in the BIOS with an unlocked CPU.

BTW - Check your PM

Tough call... that's what I was thinking! Since I've been "out of the loop" for a little while... the Morgan core is based off the XP core? Yes, the mobo does support multiplier change, that's what I'm doing now, D800@900. How hard is it to unlock the Duron 1.3, or are they already?

Don't you mean the Athlon is going to be able to overclock?? In my brief readings, is the Duron unlockable yet?

Duron 1.3 is a good chip, almost on par with Thunderbird 1.4.
However I would not count on overclocking it much
The chip is practically free anyways though, I think I paid $35 for mine..

Any other opinions, ramblings, before I make my purchase tomorrow? I'm starting to lean towards the Duron, can someone push me over! 😀

But if you look on Google, it seems that ppl are running at least 1.1 on the AZ11E and their is a FS post with a 1.3?? I thought FIC wasn't the best about updating their literature for older mobos?? I don't see why any processor with a 200MHz FSB wouldn't work, or did the Durons get that core change for >1GHz??

😕😕😕

But I did look at my manual and the highest multiplier setting is 12.5 so how could you even set up a 1.3GHz, given that 133 FSB doesn't work on these mobos??

Anyway, I think I am going to go with the Athlon now, because I like the idea of "moving up" to an Athlon and it seems like there is more headroom for tinkering. If anything, my feel is these two processors are about equal at default speeds in benchmarks, just my observations, maybe wrong but...

There is a document as recent as 4/02 on the FIC site, for cpu compatibility of the FIC AZ11E mobo. Good luck with your athlon.

thanks calvink, you swayed me! I looked at that table, but didn't look at the date on it. That, looking at my manual and your post made up my mind. And good thing too, otherwise I may have bought something that didn't work. 😉
