Processor upgrade, a couple questions

I have an 1800+ right now. My motherboard is an Asus A7V266, so I can go to a 2400+ CPU and still use it in this motherboard? I am assuming that since they are the same bus speed, or should I check with Asus?

Also, I am currently running a Thermaltake Volcano 5 for cooling. Is this going to be enough for the new CPU or should I go ahead and get a new heatsink with the new one. My 1800 runs VERY hot (60 C idle, 67 C full load), but I'm told its normal for that type of cpu. Is the 2400 going to be cooler?

Finally, is the 2400 worth going to? I figure it is since I can do CPU only and not need a new motherboard. Or should I just wait and do both and go faster?? I am kinda on a budget (the cheaper the better)

Thanks!!

if they are the same bus speed then yes it will support it

you prob won't even need a bios update but it would still be a good idea to update to the latest
sometimes they tell you what new processors were added to support with new bios revisions

the 2400+ is pretty cheap now and could offer a noticeable performance jump in many things but it's not enough to light the world on fire

if you have the money it could be worth doing
a friend of mine has a 1700+ and is thinking about upgrading to a 2400+ on an older motherboard as well

good luck

The board needs to be revision 1.07 and you will need to have bios 1011 for a 2400+. Actually, there is a 266FSB version of a 2600+, if you can find it, that may work in your board. Go here to see more details. That temp is a bit warm, I'd get an Thermalright SK-7 or something at least as good. A 2400+ might run cooler if your current CPU is a Palamino core.

If you went with a new socket A board, I'd recommend a Barton 2500+ for overclocking. Performance is slightly better with the Bartons, so I can't justify you buying a new board for the latest CPU's. If you feel the need though, you can get a CPU though, it may make a noticeable difference. Peace.

i've run a 2400+ on an asus a7v (kt133)
the board will definately boot up with even an older bios just it might not report it right during the post sequence or in the bios

but yeah i agree with the above post definately update to the latest bios just cause

btw newegg is selling the 2400+ for $77 oem and $84 retail

i wouldn't think it would be worth you buying a new athlon socket A motherboard right now just for a few more mhz unless you plan on just upgrading the cpu and motherboard which would cost you a bit more

have fun

Cool. Thanks everyone. Had no idea they sold a 2600@266. Just ordered one of those and a new Thermaltake Volcano 9 :)
