Processor Upgradability for Motherboard

Do all Athlon 64 motherboards support the full range of Athlon 64 processors? In other words, if I got a motherboard that supported the Athlon 64 3000+ (Socket 939), would that support the 4000+ as well? I just want to get an Athlon 64 motherboard that will support a cheaper 64 processor now, but that I can also have the option to upgrade in the future.
