I would recommend lowest as you could possibly get it, but 50C and below should be fine. AMD says the maximum is around 80C

What temp is fine? Whatever temp it doesn't crash at :)

If you can run Prime95 for a few hours without any problems, whatever temp its at is just fine.

if your CPU is 10-20 degrees C below the max temp listed for your CPU, but still very hot comparitively speaking (like say its 70 C under load), but its perfectly stable.. is it ok to run it that hot? Or will that severely shorten the CPU's life?

70C under full load would be pretty bad, even for a stock cooler. As far as I know, the hotter ur CPU runs, the shorter it lasts, I am not entirely sure though.
