Processor(s) recommendation for data crunching/etc...

Ok, well I've decided to shore up some cash and build a rig primarily for running SETI and D2OL, amongst a few other less consuming apps, and use as a file server if needs be. However, I would like some opinions on which processor(s) to go with for a setup like this. I am impartial as far as which brand (AMD or Intel), however I only have a budget of about $1000 for processors and mobo (possably up to $1200). Id appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

how would mp's compare with xeon or opterons for these tasks? I wouldn't mind spending a bit more for a signficant increase in performance.

If you have the extra cash go Opteron (longer life, more upgarde path, etc...) if short on cash then get a Dual Athlon 760MPX board and a couple of Barton chips and run that.

yes i agree 100% opteron is the best but dual bartons arent anything to joke about iether

dual mobile bartons modded to run in MP boards is one sweet setup....

then again dual opterons would be sweeeeeett..

so would dual xeons...

dang, dual anything would rock! 🙂 hahaha

SETI@Home Performance Compared

Sounds like 2x 1.8 (or faster) dual Opterons will be VERY FAST for data crunching. You could always try to get dual xeons and overclocking them past 3.0ghz which will make them equally good. Of course the same overclocking argument could be made with regard to Opterons.

On a seperate but related topic, why haven't via/nvidia/sis designed some cheap dual cpu chipsets for socket A cpu's? With the price of bartons right now, it would be great if there were dual cpu enthusiast versions of the nforce2 for example with overclocking features. The tyan looks like a good mobo but that amd chipset is how old? like 4 years now?
