processor running at full load while typing in Word?

ok, i am typing a paper in Word, when i notice my processor is about as hot as it gets during prime torture tests. i opened the task manager and saw that it was idle. as soon as i started typing, it went up to 100% until i stopped. it isnt doing it as i type this though. i never really thought it would run @ full load just when typing, or am i wrong?

ok, ill check, but i run spybot and adaware everyday. is there anything else i should try? this is word97 btw.

also, i just noticed some strange things with word, when i open the program twice, the second time, a box comes up that says "Word cannot open the existing [weird symbol]" then, when i try to close it, it says, "do you wan to replace the existing normal.dot?" and then i press no, and it says something about the global template, and then closes. basically, wtf is going on? i think i have some kind of virus.

did word come with the compy or do you have a disk for it?

if you have the disk, try uninstalling then reninstalling word

yeah, ive reinstalled it a few times. i have the disk. i think i last installed it about 2 months ago after a windows reinstall. i think its always had weird problems like the normal.dot thing, but ive never noticed the cpu load thing. maybe its time to go grab office 2000, or whatever the newer one is. i can probably borrow the cd from my dad's office. ill run some scans and see how it goes. this sucks because i really like word97 too.

yeah, maybe its time to move to the new one.

ok, so i wont expect this to happen if i reinstall a different version? just making sure, otherwise ill go back to wordperfect. and i definately will look into OpenOffice. thanks a lot guys.

well, im not sure if it won't happen but it will help either way. it can tell you if its word's problem or something elses

I think he is just opening task manager when i go into task manager mine goes up to 100% than goes back down after its been opened and idling for a sec.

normal.dot stores the configuration settings for Word; it's part of the product. It's been a while since I used Word97, but you can turn the prompt off.

Edit: Does the CPU usage spike only when typing using Word? For instance, does this happen when using Notepad, Wordpad or any non-Microsoft software? Just wondering if it may be a keyboard software issue.

It could be possible that some of your registry keys are screwed up. When's the last time you reformatted? And no, adaware is NOT a virus scan program 🙂.

I don't really know the answer either. But there are many possibilities.

1) Many old viruses attacked Word, they were especially popular in the Word '97 era. A good virus scanner should catch them. Also, one thing that most people forget to do is to perform a regular Microsoft Office Update. An office update could eliminate the harm from viruses if you do have them. Note: I don't know if Microsoft still supports '97.

2) It could be a spell checker issue. By default, Word spell checks everything you type against the built in dictionary and the custom dictionary. If either is too large or gets currupt, I could easilly imagine near 100% processor use. Try turning off the automatic spell checker.

3) Turn off all the useless stuff: office assistant, etc. These do nothing and eat up a lot of processor time.

ok, i ran that trend micro scan, and there was nothing. also, i dont think adaware is anti-virus, just to let you guys know. this doesnt occur with notepad/wordpad. i think ill have to reinstall and try again, and maybe upgrade. also, im sure its not just the spike that occurs when opening the Task manager. i left it open while typing and watched it.
