processor recommendations?

I'm doing a system upgrade soon and have been out of the cpu info loop for awhile. I will be gaming soon so performance matters.

What's recommended for a processor in the $150-200 range? I probably won't do any overclocking. Is Intel's dual processor and high cache the way to go nowadays or is AMD still the choice for gaming? Are there any releases on the horizon (1-2mo) that I should wait for? I'm hoping to put together a decent cpu/mobo combo for around $250.
 
DFI Infinity for around $70 and then your choice of processor. If you could add another $100 to that you could go dual core.
