I have a Dell 8200, P4 1.8 (not the "a"), 256 L2 cache, 512 RDRAM, 400mhz bus. I called Dell and they tell me that the motherboard can take up to a 3.06 processor. My question is will the bus, at 400mhz, hinder performance if I plug in a better processor?

i'm not an intel guy by any stretch of the imagination... but i gather if the mobo is fairly recent, you should be able to flash it to support newer processors... if you can't, only get the fastest processor that the mobo supports

p.s. you're telling me that you 1.8GHz/512MB RAM isn't fast enough for you? i find that difficult to believe as very few people actually need that kind of speed

If you called Dell, and they said that your motherboard can take a 3.06GHz cpu, then your motherboard supports 533 FSB as well as 400. So when you install your new chip (if you get one) the MoBo will automatically change the FSB to 533.
