Yea, I am having stability issues with it. Sometimes the PC won't boot at all, sometimes it will freeze. I thought it was a heat problem. Decided to put arctic silver on it, so I was cleaning off the old stuff, and thats when I found this. :(

Yeah if you are having problems, then you need a new chip. Sometimes you get lucky and break a "not important" part of the chip, but it sounds like you broke an important part. Do you have any idea about how it broke? That sucks man! Anyway, here are some new CPUs to look at:

Here is your old chip:
AthlonXP 1900+ OEM @ NewEgg ($52 shipped)

Or if you want an upgrade (and your motherboard supports it - double check):
AthlonXP Barton 2500+ Retail @ NewEgg ($91 shipped)

Good luck!

-Josh

BTW nice business you have there!

Most likely... usually some debris causes that... which is why you should clean everything thoroughly and do it in a clean place other than the floor ;)

that sucks, I broke a pally 1600+ just like that while replacing the fan. Now I use shims to avoid that in the future. It ran fine for a couple of days, then it started giving me random lockups, and no boots, and then it burnt along with the KT266 MB it was on. Its bad to lose a chip, but if you keep tring you might also have to replace other parts too. :-(

as robcy said that chip may kill your motherboard, I think you must buy a new chip, wether you like it, or not, but the core is very delicated one point of 1mm2 means 564000 transistor less one of that transistors is surely important, so... it's all, it has dead RIP
