Eventually I'm going to have to get a notebook. But for now I'm not in any particular hurry. What I want to know is when Penryn will be available for the notebook segment and what AMD has planned. Does anyone know how soon quad cores are going to be shoved into notebooks? I dont really need anything with a lot of GPU power, but CPU power is of a concern to me and I would like to get a notebook based on the 45nm Penryn refresh if possible instead of the current Core 2. Again, if there is a Barcelona in the notebook segment I would happily look into that as well. So what do we have to look forward to down the line?

id wait for penryn. The barcelona leaks arent looking very promising. Also solid state hard drives to become should become more common (hopefully).

Solid state drives should help a ton in battery life as well.

Unfortunately, the video card leaves a lot to be desired. I've seen notebooks for sale with 8700Ms, but does anyone know when the 8800Ms will be available? The 8700Ms don't offer enough of an improvement over my 7800GTX Go. CPU technology has improved significantly in notebooks, but the GPUs still haven't moved forward enough to allow me to justify spending the 2500 to 3k for a new high performance notebook.

I'm not really interested in GPU power. I'm working on a new quad core rig to handle that, I was more interested in die shrinks to save power than anything. But I can't wait till March of next year just to get a die shrunk Core 2.

if you don't need GPU - that's why you buy a $650 laptop today :)
