processor limitations in bios?

I have an old Abit BE6 (440bx), and even with the newest bios, it only supports celeron up to 700mhz and p3 to 850mhz. I was wondering what would happen if I tried to put a faster processor (celeron 850) on the board. Would it just not properly recognize the processor or would it actually not run? Thanks for any input,
