processor comparison

The P4 2.4B could be overclocked to about 2.93 GHz. The 2.4E might get up to 3GHz. The Venice 3000+, meanwhile, can get up to 3500+ speeds fairly easily, and often 3700+ or 3800+.

It's possible that the P4 might perform better in specific audio and/or video editing applications, but for the most part it would be very much outrun by the Athlon.

Not without HT it wont...the 3000+ venice has a better shot at 2.5ghz and the 2.4b 533fsb if a C1 steppiing may make it to 3.15-3.2ghz....

Yep....HT in most encoding apps are good for anywhere from 15-25% gain....That would mean a 2.4c 800fsb chip not only gainig 5% at laast for the added bandwidth of the bus but it gained 22% in TMPGenc for me...That made the 2.4c as fast as a 2.8ghz 533fsb P4b....

Also my 3000+ oc'd to 2.6ghz was only as fast as my P4c was at 3.2ghz range...take the 3.2ghz P4c with multithreaded truned off and the 2.6ghz A64 was much faster then the 3.2ghz P4 and even my 2.4c@3.5ghz was not faster....

I actually think at stock 3000+ 1.8ghz the 2.4c could give it a run for each money ut would likely be slightly behind....

this shows a 1.8ghz 3000_ just above a 2.6c to 2.8c northwood..prescotts would be worse at this lower speed do to their lengthened pipeline...

The 2.4B is neck-and-neck with the Winchester 3000+ in mp3 encoding (linky). Presumably the 2.4E and 3000+ Venice would have similar stats. Otherwise, the 3000+ beats the 2.4.

Still, the P4 isn't too far out of the A64's league. In video editing, the 3000+ Winchester has a ~25% advantage over the 2.4B. While certainly a noticeable difference, it's nothing like the speed advancements seen in 1998-2001. The 2.4B is still boasts considerable performance. The A64 3000+ is undoubtedly superior, but the performance gap isn't exactly enormous.
