Process of putting together MSI K8NGM2-FID System

I haven't built a system in years and need advice on how to proceed. Will be purchasing the following: MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard, and either 1 or 2 mb PC3200. Will match it with a Seagate barracuda drive (250mb), and an amd 3500 Venice or San Diego core.

1) What is a good selection of memory for this set up?
2) How do I go about installing windows xp on the new drive? I want to use the old drive for data storage only.
3) Any other parts to go with it (SATA cables, etc) needed, or does the MB and new drive come with these?
4) Any particular heatsink/fan for this combo over the stock one. I am buying it to make a silent system.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Value RAM is the best choice for this motherboard, like CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB). Choosing performance RAM is almost meaningless and a waste of money. Look at Zebo's article Official 939 Memory Matrix. 1GB is enough for the average user. Please read the THG article How Much RAM Do You Really Need? with this regard.
  2. No particular attention is required. SATA drives will be recognized automatically without any driver.
  3. Motherboard comes with only one SATA cable (Motherboard accessories). If you install more than one SATA drive, you have to buy ones unless you buy retail SATA drives.
  4. CPU stock heatsink/fan is enough because of the fixed CPU voltage. If you are extremely picky about fan noise, you may choose Thermalright XP-90 OEM + a quality silent fan (Panaflo L1BX for example; you can choose it from "Option"). You don't have to change NB/SB heatsink; their max temp is at most 50 deg C.
