Hello,

I was wondering how the processing capability of the dual core copares with its predecessors.

would a dual core 2.4 GHz have twice the processing capabilty of an ordinary 2.4 GHz pentium processor?

Yes, it does have twice the capability. Whether the programs can use it is another question. If the software you're running on it is:

1. CPU limited
2. Multi-core capable

then yes, it would in theory be twice as fast (minus overhead.)

Pretty much yeah, assuming it's a multithreaded task. Of course, that's assuming that the 2 chips in question are based on the same architecture (pentium d 8 series and pentium 4 prescott, pentium d 9 series and pentium 4 cedar mill, athlon 64 x2 and athlon 64). A 2.4GHz C2D would be much faster than twice as fast as a 2.4GHz Pentium 4.

The new Pentium dual core chips are much, much faster than the original Pentium that Weird Al sang about. I mean there is really no comparison. Also, of the current CPUs on the market, Pentium 4 Core Duo (or Core 2 Duo) is much faster than a regular Pentium 4 (Core Solo), although probably not actually double the speed in normal working conditions.

Pentium 4 is based on the netburst architecture, core and core2duo are based on somthing entirely different, the pentium 4 name was ditched along with the netburst architecture. Core duo's and core 2 duos and even core solos are not pentium 4 chips :p

The only new architecture chips to carry the pentium name are the low and pentium E2xxx, apart from that the names been replaced.

If you're comparing an E6600 2.4 Ghz Core 2 Duo, against a 2.4 Ghz Pentium 4, yeah, the C2D will be twice as fast as a Pentium 4, while running any single-threaded application. If you were to run a multithreaded app, though, it would be ~four times as fast, since it's roughly twice as fast, at the same clockspeed, and it has double the amount of cores (processors).
