procedure for SSD install?

Hello,

Finally got me a little SSD, 60GB vertex 2. I'll be using it mostly for the OS of course. It was a gift and I'm all giddy to install it but don't want to screw anything up.

Any special tips, tricks or anything before I go ahead? Currently I have 2x 1TB WD Black, so those will be storage+backup now.

Can I simply hook up the SSD and install the OS (Win7 x64)?

Enable AHCI in BIOS and you should be set. 😀

Don't waste your time doing most/any of the tweaks you might hear. Win7 takes care of all the important stuff automagically.

If you are using it just for OS, you should be OK. It's useful to do few tweaks when its your only drive in your system, such as in a laptop. This includes turning off system restore and hibernate.

One thing I did (but wouldn't necessarily recommend it) was to create a RAM drive on my laptop. This reduces the number of writes to the SSD, and generally keeps junk from building up. When I switched out the SSD to a Seagate XT, I kept the RAM drive, as it's nice to have the temp folder wiped out everytime I restart.

Thanks for the tips. I'm up and running and just getting the usual basic stuff out of the way.

A rather low end board from about 2 years ago, MSI G31M3-L V2.
It might be lacking in some features eh.
WEI HD rating went up to 7.2, I think it used to be under 5 with regular HD so that's pretty good.

Firefox cold start takes about 2 seconds now even if I'm opening other stuff at the same time (Outlook, IM etc).
Bootup time is pretty quick but not all that much faster, maybe ~12 seconds instead of 14-15. There's about 30GB free space after installing windows and some apps.

From the manual, your BIOS looks a lot like it does on my previous motherboard (an ASRock Socket A from 2003), and if it's like that, yeah, you've probably got a smaller set of options. You more than likely already have it set up as correctly as it can be.
