Proc upgrade - Abit TX5

I have an Abit TX5 board with a Pentium 233. What is the fastest AMD K? (I don't know) proc that I can use and if it can be overclocked, that is great too. I want to squeeze a little more life out of the TX5. I'm not looking to upgrade to a different motherboard.

If memory serves me correctly, with the latest bios that board will run an AMD K6 300(fsb66) without any overclocking. As far as overclocking one of those AMD,s, you might get lucky, and then again you might not.

if i recall that board supports 2.0 volts, and has 83mhz bus. Possibly you could run a k6-3+/500

I did a little research,and I hope this information will help you.
The TX5 fastest bus speed is no more than 83mhz, and the greatest known multipying factor being 4.5x, the fastest obtainable speed theoretically would be 373.5mhz. If you set the bus speed to the factory recommended 66mhz, you can run the K6 300 at default settings.
These processors were probably not the best candidates for over clocking though. Unless you can maximize the cooling, because a higher voltage setting than the factory 2.2 volts would probably be needed to maintain stability.
Also note that there two different AMD 300 CPU's. The one just described, the K6 300, and the K62 300 that used a bus speed of 100mhz with a multiplying factor of 3x.
Unfortunately the Intel 430TX chipset used on this board, will not support any of the K62 or K63 processors other than the 266 version, which was the only one to still use the 66mhz setting that was the standard for earlier K6 processors.

No, it doesnt matter if you can use just 4.5 x officially. By being able to use more than 3.5x , that means you have use of the bf2 pin, and there will be a setting for up to 5.5 x, and 6x is the same as 2x with newer k6 chips. 6x83 is 500. THe tx will work with up to whatever processor will work with the voltages the motherboard will supply and i know the tx5 can do 2.0 volts. CHeck toms hardware guide as he has a lot of articles on upgrading with the k62+

:)I'll look into the BF2 pin and what it's purpose is and check my bios for 2.0 volts. I flashed the latest bios during the Y2K hay day so the voltage shouldn't be a problem. Hopefully the TX5 manual will talk of the BF2 pin so I won't be totally clueless in configuring.

The 64mb EDO memory may present a problem. I missed my favorite show Sunday. How was the season premere of X-Files (Fans only)? I don't have much couch potato time. When does it come on again?

You probably won't find any mention of the BF2 pin in the manual but if you are interested in modifying the board here's a link you can use for information.

he wont have to modify his bf2. its already there if he can set it to 4.5, it'll just be an undocumented setting

opps guys, i thought you were talking about the tx5n jumpered version. For the tx5 , it'll just enable when you put in a k6-2. The k6-300 wasn't produced with more than a 4.5 x mult, so it wont show more than that in the bios. They never made a k6-333, but there was a k6-2/333 and 366 so 5.5 will be there

Does this mean I can pop in a K6-2 or K6-3 400 with a FSB of 66mhz (only because I still have EDO memory) and it should work fine?
