First off check the jumpers on the hard drive and make sure they are set to master, Then set your bios up to boot off of the floppy first and then the hard drive. Next fdisk your hard drive and then format it with the format c:/s command and it should work. If it reads the drive in the bios this should work for you. Also make sure the new drive is the only thing on your ide cable while setting it up.

:D I'm guessing because I'm stupid. Is the hard drive powered? check to make sure the power cable the hard drive is connected to is working :) make sure all the hardware settings are correct. cables are plugged in right, jumpers are set. Next I guess you gotta boot from a floppy or cd-rom and format the drive and install an OS on it. other than that I have no idea.

p.s. The IDE cables are plugged in fine so the BIOS sees it.

edited: oh yea regarding the same error message even if you put in a cdrom or floppy disk.. you'll have to set up your bootup sequence in the bios to boot to the floppy or cdrom first if you want to boot from them. then you can fix it back to boot to your hard drive first later if you want. when or if you fix it later, i'd just leave it the same... and clear the cdrom tray and floppy tray of any disks if you don't wanna boot from floppy/cdrom
