Problm with Pacific Digital CDRW

I have a Pacific CDRW that I bought for a computer that I am building for my Aunt..... Its a 12x10x32 Burnproof drive. When ever I plug it in it wont decete and is flashing orange and red but if I go into the BIOS and manually search for it it will eventually show up. When it is plugged in it takes 30 secs to run through the autodetect but when I unplug it the time is 2 secs. I have tried it as a primary slave, sec master and sec slave. Im thinking this drive is DOA since its new but I may not have something set correctly. Anybody know what could be wrong?
