Hello, I just recently upgraded to SP2 Pro edition and now my computer won't boot up. I'm running knoppix on cd to be able to access my files, but I can't burn them onto cds or anything, and can't figure out how to send them to another computer on the network. I then tried to reinstall XP Pro SP1a and it still has the same problem. When it gets to the screen where it shows Windows XP Pro loading, it just has a screen that says windows had a problem and asks if I want to do safe mode w/vga support or network drivers then start windows normally. None of the options work. Is there any hope of saving my files at least?

Just tried it... when I type in the commands it says the command is not found. I was typing in cd $ntservicepackuninstall$\spuninst and it said it wasn't a recognized command. I was thinking of this... attaching my hard drive to another computer, setting it as slave, and copying over my files then putting it back into mine, formatting, installing xp, then send the files back. Think that'll work fine?

That will work with one minor hurdle, you need to take ownership of the files that were in your user profile's directory in C:\Documents and Settings. You can do that a couple of ways, one of which is to boot into Safe Mode on your new installation, find the folders you need to take ownership of, right-click them, choose Security, and do like shown in this image:

Put a checkmark in the box for Replace owner on subcontainers and objects and let 'er rip on that task until it's done. You would give Ownership to one of the accounts on your new Windows installation, of course.
