Problems with XP Pro install. Hangs after restart

I'm trying to build a drive with XP Pro to support my cycling trainer. The installaton seems to go fine, but when i eject the disc and restart the computer it hangs with a rapidly flashing cursor on a black screen after POST.

This machine has run XP Pro before, but I forget whether I had the OS and patched it after installing some additional hardware. I have recently updated the RAM by adding two 4 G sticks since I last ran XP (My main drive is a Win 7 64 Pro OS). I figured it would just ignore the memory.

Should I take out the 8G of newer RAM and simply run the older 4G still in place?

Any other ideas to get through the SNAFU on restart?

Box Specs in sig, though I've added 8 G of DDR3 RAM (It was $35).

Is the controller on the motherboard set to sata/ahci or ide mode in the bios? If it is sata/ahci did you use f6 drivers at install or slipstreamed xp disc?

Try re-doing the installation with only 2 Gb memory present, then add memory after Windows is installed. It's also possible that the MBR (master boot record) is fouled up. To fix that, you could delete and then re-create the Windows partition (using the bootable Windows installation CD menu).
