Problems with x1950pro AGP and VIA chipset?

I'm trying to get a Powercolor Radeon x1950pro 256mb AGP to work with the following system:

Windows XP SP2
AOpen AK86-L Socket 754 motherboard with VIA chipset
Athlon 64 2800 at 1.8 (stock speed)
1 gig Geil 3200 DDR
160 gig Seagate HD
Corsair 520 powersupply

While I know my CPU and RAM will bottleneck the system, I'm still getting unusually poor performance from the card - no better and in some cases worse than my Radeon x800xl. I suspect some kind of incompatability with the chipset which hasn't yet been resolved by drivers. I've tried with and without VIA 4-in-1 motherboard drivers. The card would not do 3D at all with the drivers installed. I?ve tried both 6.12 and 7.1 drivers. After a clean reinstall of Windows (without the 4-in1s) it works, but still poorly. Some symptoms:

1) If AGP aperture is set to 128mb or less, the desktop defaults to minimum resolution and color quality and won't go higher. At 256mb up to 1gig AGP aperture it works with no discernable difference among the settings.

2) In 3dMark 2005 it performs roughly the same as my x800xl when it's overclocked (about 5300) with poorer scores in the second test (firefly) and terrible scores in the CPU test (880 with the new card, and 3360 with the old). One oddity: AGP aperture size appears as ?0 B? in system details for 3dMark, rather than whatever it?s actually set to.

4) With Catalyst Control Center it will not display the 3D preview. In other programs, it seems to work the same with or without CCC installed.

5) Seems to be roughly the same as the old card in Company of Heroes, but the slow moments are much slower. When there's a lot going on it grinds to a halt.

6) I haven't reloaded other games yet, but when I checked before the reinstall, it again was sometimes better, sometimes worse than the x800xl.

7) Everything fine in dxdiag.

So, have others had success with the x1950pro AGP and this VIA chipset? Might there be BIOS settings that improve performance? I've already tried changing everything I could think of. Any reports of issues that might be resolved with future drivers?

Thanks for any responses
