Problems with WINDOWS 98 with my desktop?

I was installing a internet cd called PeoplePC yesterday and after it downloaded it asked me to restart my comp. I restarted the comp and before the desktop icons could come up it started downloading more files. Well I felt this procedure was taking too long so I restarted my comp. Now when my comp restarts I don't have a start menu nor any desktop icons. I can't even right click. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks in Advance.

Reinstall Windows 98. Sounds like you stopped the process while it was updating Windows files and now the are corrupted. BTW this belongs in the OS forum.

When I type in D:/setup in the command prompt it says there is no d drive. It won't read from the drive at all under command prompt.

Run dos fdisk and erase the drive first. then instal from scratch.

You have started a number of threads regarding this computer and its issues with the D drive. Can you summarize for us the problems you are having?

I think you need to go over some basics like accessing your cd rom drive in dos
the easiest way is to put you windows 98 cd in the cd drive and reboot
and see if you can acces your cd rom drive
or if that doesn't work create a windows start up disk
and if that doesn't work then you may have an actual problem with your cd rom drive

also you need to learn how to back up and restore your windows registry
the windows registry if it becomes corrupt or dammaged can cause all sorts of problems
in a lot of cases, problems can be resolve by restoring yesterday's registry

fdisking and reinstalling is not a fix but it's always an option
one I seldom choose.

reinstall windows over itself may work but you will have to reupdate everything to get file version in sink

but first you want to see if you cd drive is going bad or if it's just that drivers are not being loaded

in the case of a program install going bad
boot to safe-mode if you can
goto add remove in the control panel
remove the program to get the file out of there
reboot hit f8 to get the boot menu just like for getting to safe-mode
boot up in command prompt and use
scanreg /restore
to restore the registry from the day before the program was installed

note that if you have let more than five days go by or your scanreg isn't loading on windows boot up
you may not have anything to restore

also if the program changed your internet explorer you may have to deal with that as well
