Problems with Vista x64 Install...

During the install:

1) The computer rebooted several times before finally being able to extract 100%...

2) When Vista was booting up for the first time it went from loading bar to blue screen memory dump.

3) I had set two accounts up one Admin and one without admin...

4) It booted finally and I was able get in only under the non-admin account as the accoun w/admin wouldn't even show on the logon screen.

5) I just gave admin rights to the other account.

6) I have been able to use the computer for almost 2 months now no major problems other then this:

I can't create a system restore point due to an access denied error and when I run a Virus scan with Avira Antivir Premium Edition it takes 4-7 hours with several warnings that say access denied to given files... mostly page file... and a couple other system files.

I have tried to change permissions and ownerships manually and have followed this guide to reset security settings. Though the settings stop halfway through and the computer reboots.

Is there a way to restore the original admin account/settings or anything so that I don't have to reinstall? Though I may reinstall when SP1 is released anyways. Thanks.

Have you done some testing to see if any hardware is flakey/broken?

What do you mean by extracting 100%? Do you mean the grey bar filling up or the actual copying data files to HDD part?

Yes, I have done testing on the hardware and everything was stable in xp pro with memtest and prime95+ w/24hrs+. Though during the install I had the ram settings set to auto in the bios and found out very quickly that I need to make sure they are set to what the ram manufacturer wants especially with vista...

As far as extracting, it was while extracting the installation files, it kept rebooting and I would have to start all over... part of me thinks the HDD might be going bad but I've had it for less then a year and until this issue I have not seen any other problems...

The installer was up and this was happening after the install was started... however this was back when I was installing it and it has been installed and working for the most part and I've only had 1 BSOD since then.

After I finished the install, I found out that it was important to make sure the memory was set at the memory manufacturer's recommended settings or it would foul things up. It was set on auto instead which I guess is a problem... I just haven't gone back to reinstall.

I seem to recall discussions about installing Vista x64 with < 4GB memory installed, otherwise problems would ensue... if you could even get the install to complete. I can't comment on the validity of this, but I seem to recall it coming up more then once.

Yup 4GB's was a problem and I was only using 2GB's. I think my problem was where I set the bios to run the memory on auto and with the 680i, it is a known issue that it under volts and doesn't set the timings correctly. I did not change this until after the install.
