Valve games keep crashing when starting and when i alt+ tab. Ive come up with some things that may cause it
- Vista 64 bit?
- ATI 3850 Graphics card?

Any help, or past experiances are well appreciated

No help here, but I've had that problem this last week also. I've been trying to play Portal, but it hasn't been working :^/

I'm hoping a reboot will fix the problem, but I haven't felt like restarting to give it a try.

I just inadvertently restarted my computer(power dropped from the grid), and I can now play Portal. I guess you've restarted your machine?

You may have just needed to Restart Steam. Might have had an Update.

Alt-Tab might be related to the newness of the video card. If it is it will probably be fixed in a Driver update.

I've never been able to alt+tab out of a source engine game. I've had problems with HL2, CS:S, everything. I'd count yourself lucky you've been able to do it til just recently.

I've had no problems alt+tabbing from a Valve game, but I do know that when a friend of mine alt+tabs outta TF2 he gets some odd side effects; his voice on vent gets garbled for one.
