Problems with USB 2.0

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this issue...

I just built this computer and everything works great, except my USB. All USB ports work fine with my WD 80 gig external HDD, but all my other peripherals (Joystick, SD card Reader...) are not working right... I have installed all drivers for all the peripherals and for the USB's. In some ports the peripherals are being detected, but in the ones physically on the mobo they are not being detected. Again the External HDD works fine in all 8 USB ports.

System Specs are below...

Start by entering your motherboard's BIOS menus and go to Advanced > Chipset > USB Configuration, and confirm that the USB is set for 8 ports and USB 2.0.

Next, update WinXP Pro with Service Pack 1 if you haven't got SP1 on there already. If you're not sure, go Start > Run and type winver, then click OK, and you'll get a version panel to tell you if you have SP1 on there.

Now hit Windows Update at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get any updates you might be needing, reboot if needed, and then open your Device Manager, go down to the USB and expand it, and do an Uninstall of each sub-item in there. Now reboot and see where you're at.

I know that sounds a little strange, but give it a try. 🙂 You got a pretty respectable power supply in that rig, right?

My windows version has Service Pack 1.
Ok I uninstalled the sub items under USB and rebooted.
When the found new hardware wizard came up, I did both automatic and an advanced search for the drivers...
I pointed the search to system 32 folder and the Asus Mobo CD. I get the wizard telling me this:
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necesary hardware.

When I go into device manager and try to udate the drivers I get the same message.

Yes, I got a descent power supply (MGE 500W)😎

Yea...
Tried that again...
didn't work🙁...
ASUS told me to re-install windows, but when I try that Windows is not detecting any Hard Drives 🙁 Please help...

I'm going to share something with you...

I HATE SERIAL ATA! 😛

Ok, got that outta my system... coffee... breathe in breathe out... 😱

You have a RAID0. The way this works is:

1) you go into the VIA SATA RAID BIOS by pressing the Tab key at the POST screen and waiting for it to come up.

2) in the VIA SATA controller's BIOS, you define the two drives as a RAID array. It should not be necessary for you to do this, since it was done before, but the instructions are in Section 5 of the manual if needed.

3) once the two drives are set up as an array, the controller will be able to present them to Windows Setup as if they were one drive :Q

4) on the K8V SE Deluxe's CD-ROM that came with it, there are three Makedisk.exe utilities. One of them will be in the \Drivers\VIARAID\6420RAID\DriverDisk\ folder on the CD-ROM. Run it. It'll make a floppy diskette with the VIA SATA drivers on it.

5) Also make the other preparations you'll need in order to rebuild the system and bring it online without risking a worm infection. Read my tips here so you have your preparations in place. Besides ZoneAlarm and perhaps Grisoft AVG Free Edition installers, also grab this patch kit from Microsoft since it patches some holes that SP1A leaves open. Burn that stuff to CD or put it on a USB drive so you can use it before going online.

6) Now restart the system and boot from your Windows CD, begin Setup, and at that first blue screen you'll see it prompting you to press the F6 key. Press the F6 key and have your VIA SATA driver floppy ready for when it asks you. Put it in, press the S key as prompted... you should see your way from there. 🙂

Kinda strange that Windows wasn't getting a grip on the USB 2.0 controllers 😕 Did you try aiming it at Windows Update for a driver source?

Well, so far I believe I have solved my problem. I could think of these possible reasons on why I could not get the USB to work:

1) I stripped streamed service pack 1 into my windows installation cd, thus used a "copied windows cd" on the original install. Perhaps it got corrupted during this process or this was just a bad idea in the first place.

2) Windows got corrupted somehow??? Probably during the strip streaming process....

3) I was in a rush to get it done so perhaps I just did't do something right??? But, seems like anything caused by that could have been fixed without re-installing windows. (Always, pay close attention to what your doing when building a computer, I think I payed more attention to the hardware because I had never done that before, but less attention to the software because I have done that many times before.)

What I did to fix...

I re-installed Windows XP Pro, using the original CD I baught a couple of years ago (so it did not have Service Pack 1 on it . which has the SATA drivers.) Just install the original and get SP1 doing a normal windows update if your copy of windows does not have SP1.

Thank you Mechbgon... I'm sure you could have told me everything I just said, but I wanted to post the solution in case somebody else ran into the same problem.
