problems with the 'Start' button

My niece went into a 'deleting' franzy last night and now my sister can't open the Start menu...Programs, Favorites, etc. I take it she deleted something important?

...Win98, by the way.

Is it the old, "ain't got no Programs menu" trick? 95b and SE pull this crap on me, once in a while. Only way I've fixed it goes, "format c:\ /s," for Win95. And "format c:\" in Win98. SBT.

Try to reinstall win98 without formating first. It may work.what kind of PC is it? you may need to use your restore disk. She went into the windows dir and thats a big no no.Let me know if I can help.

you *might* be able to get away with installing shell.inf -- doubtful, but it's a quickie
it's in C:\windows\inf -- right click it and choose install
Frankly, though, if files were deleted, I'd agree with pcrepairman. Just make sure to boot to dos and delete iemigrat.dll in C:\windows\system if IE's been updated -- otherwise, some updated system files will remain which can screw stuff up (although I've had some success just reinstalling IE5.5 over b0rked systems)

Hope this helps
