Problems with the NIC

Given:
1) WinXP Home desktop.
2) OnBoard NIC
3) Wired connected to Negear G router

Behaviour observed:
1) When router is Switched ON and the desktop is Booted. [NO PROBLEMS CASE!]
- router gives the IP address to desktop.
- ipconfig shows proper IP/subnet/default gateway.
- can connect to INTERNET.

2) When router is Switched OFF and the desktop is Booted. [PROBLEM CASE!]
- After 'switching router ON', the router gives IP address to desktop.
- ipconfig shows proper IP/subnet/default gateway.
- BUT can not connect to INTERNET (can not even PING default GATEWAY!)

Any ideas??

What exactly is the problem?

The corect on/off sequence is turn on the modem first, then the router, then the PCs. If you boot the PCs first and then the router, although ipconfig may show a valid IP, it didnt really happen, so you need to run ipconconfig /renew or reboot. The router should be kept on all the time, and the PCs shutdown when not in use for a long time.

in #2 - open Cmd prompt. type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew
can you connect to the internet now?
can you ping your router?

The ipconfig /renew or disabling/enabling of the Network Connection does not work either.

The configuration of the system is like this:
1) Cable Modem is ALWAYS on.
2) Router (which may be TURNed ON/OFF) is connected to Cable Modem.
- This configuration enables me take my wireless network OFFline whenever I want.
3) Win2000 and WinXP machines are connected to this ROUTER via WIREd connection.

My other Win2000 machine can work without any hassel under this 'ROUTER OFF and REBOOT' condition.
The problem is with just WinXP machine (and potentially could be WinXP bug!!!).

This shouldn't make a difference, but if you can try switching the nic's and ethernet cables.
what type router is it?

It is Netgear WGR614 router.

When the machine is Booted/rebooted while the ROUTER is ON, the things WORK beautifully. Subsequent TURNing ON/OFF of the ROUTER (as long as the PC is ON) does NOT have any problems.
