Problems with TDK 40X Burner and Nero

[Achtung]

Seems like half the time when I try to copy a CD in Nero, I get an error message stating "Focus or tracking error" and the write fails, leaving me with a coaster. Here's some of what is in the log file:

As I said, its a 40X TDK VeloCD drive and I'm using the version of Nero that came with the drive, and I have also tried downloading the update to Nero, which didn't help much. If anyone has any idea what this problem is related to (CD drive, driver, Nero) I would really appreciate the help. Thanks!

I would try a different burning program. If it works in another program then Nero is probably messed up.

Also most likely you could update the firmware to a Liteon firmware and burn the speed up to 48X write.

Check out cdfreaks.com if you want to update to a liteon firmware.

If it doesn't work in another burning program then the drive sounds defective.

Try a complete uninstall and reinstall of Nero and definitely use the latest version of Nero.

EDIT: Focus and Tracking points to hardware. Might not be a bad idea to 1) try a slow burn speed and 2) try a different burning program before reinstalling.

Make sure DMA is enabled.
