Problems with Sygate and DSL sharing...

Hi guys, I want to get my ADSL shared over my network. The modem is an external USB dsl modem so I basically should only need one NIC in each computer (2 machines only).

The LAN cards in the machines are pretty old, ISA cards. One is a linksys Ether 16 LAN card, and the other is an Ether2000 (i think). I downloaded Sygate, and set it up so that the machine with the modem was the host, and the other the client. I didn't really do much in the way of configuring.

The problem is, I can't get any kind of connection on the client PC (bare in mind the TCP/IP network is working fine). When I go to the configure option within sygate, for the host machine it gives me a warning message saying 'No ETHERNET CARD has been found!'. Even when I set it to auto detect, it will give the same message, and the same thing happens when I assign the PC with a static IP (my ISP is dynamic IP - changes each time you connect). I'm really at a loss. I know of someone who has done this with the same ISP I use, but he said it was literally plug and play so he can't really help with my problem. I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to networking, so any help would be extremely appreciated.

BTW, I use Win98 FE.

thank you guys. 🙂

Hmmn, just read that there's an issue with sygate/win98 FE. I'm going to try and 'get hold of' Win98 SE and see how that goes. 🙂

Hi,

I'm not sure about the issues with 98FE, but I have Sygate 4.0 running on a three system LAN. Each one is running different OS (Win2k/98SE/98Lite). Each one took a while to debug, but here are some basic suggestions:
Reboot TCP/IP on all computers and setup the server first. If the server is setup first things seem to go alot smoother. I know you said your network works fine, but make sure it's pure TCP/IP, no NETBEUI or other on clients. Ping everything from each computer. Set your TCP/IP manually on all computers along with changing your gateway and DNS. Then, like I said, if your server is working, the clients should be easy. Make sure there are no extra network adapters(AOL). If everything still fails, reply and I'll try to help more.

As Always,
D

Thanks, as I said, I'll be getting SE very soon. Hopefully it'll go smoothly from there, but if not, I know I can get some help here 🙂
