problems with SETI and 100% cpu utilization

When SETI is running, my PC locks up. Sometimes the screen just goes black and it restarts. Sometimes everything freezes... no blue screen, no warning... it just won't take any input from the mouse or keyboard.

What hardware items could cause this?

So far I've eliminated the memory (by swapping it out) and cooling. Those don't seem to be the problems.

BUT, it could be the mobo, the cpu, what else? This configuration (celeron600, Abit BM6 mobo, non over-clocked) has worked fine and crushed near 1000 WUs in the past two years.

Where does one go next? I haven't really got the cash to 'try' a new mobo or CPU. I can't just leave SETI off now can I? Even if I do, what happens when I'm doing intensive porn downloads? I don't want to have the PC die in the middle of a.... a download.

???

HEY.... WU's are downloads. All in the name of science... that's what I say!

power supply, hadn't thought of that???

Are you useing a newer NVIDIA video card? My brother had problems like that until he updated his drivers but that was only when he was playing a certain game. Same symtoms though.

Also if you are using Windows XP when it is restarting it probably is BSODing. Right click on mycomputer and then slect properties. Go to advanced and check the startup and recovery options. There is a setting there to automatically restart is there is a system failure. If that is checked it restarts on some BSODs before you even see them.

Well, when I was downloading some really hot photos, I got a virus and it corrupted the bios. Since I didn't have another board like it I couldn't do the "hot swap" and I was flucked. That'll teach you (or rather me) to go to those "bad" places.

Looks like it might be memory after all. Who would guess a PC133, 256MB stick on Kingston would flop on a 66Mhz FSB. At least it's suppose to have a life time warranty.

The only way I'll know for sure.... 100%CPU utilization with Seti AND pron.
