I just installed a Seagate Cheetah ST336706LW 34gb SCSI disc to compliment my Western Digital 120gb ATA drive. I also installed an Adaptec 29160 SCSI card. Windows will detect the Seagate drive in the Device Manager, when I go to format it, it doesn't show up in the Disk Management. The drive is also detected during startup and in the BIOS. I have the most current drivers from Adaptec. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Cheetah 36ES specs
Adaptec 29160 specs

Let's start with the physical connections. The SCSI cable should have a terminator on one end. There should be a plug just about an inch from the terminator. Plug the hard drive onto that plug right next to the terminator.

The opposite end of the cable from the terminator should plug into the 29160. 29160's have two internal 68-pin fittings on them, and the fitting closest to the rear of the computer is the one you should plug the SCSI cable into. The other one is for SE devices. There are also 29160N's, so if you have the N version, please holler :)

The drive has an ID jumper but unless it's set to the forbidden 7, it really should not matter what particular ID it's set to. 0 would be fine, if you want to set it yourself. Refer to the technical manual that you'll find at the Cheetah 36ES link up above, it shows the jumpers.

See if you had a slip-up on any of that stuff. Otherwise, post back with an update. Welcome to the Forums drengr :)

 I checked all physical connections and everything is as it should be. The SCSI ID is 0 (default) and the SCSI Controller is 7. I haven't messed with the jumpers at all. The only thing I can think of is maybe a faulty SCSI cable or terminator. I will try another to check on this. Could it be that Windows XP is missing a driver for the SCSI drive?

Your 29160 card should have come with all Windows drivers (i've got a 19160 and it came with drivers going back to Win95 & NT.) I installed the drivers on my W2K machine and haven't had any problems with my drive.

The 29160 also has it's own BIOS, accesible during initial computer boot; Ctrl-A gets you in. The default settings should work, but consult your manual before changing any of these.

Make sure that you are up-to-date on your Windows updates also.
