Problems with SCSI HD's

I received two SCSI HD's from somebody, and I can't get them to work. One is a WD LVD drive, and the other is an IBM U160 drive. I have an Adaptec 2940UW and a 2940U2W to try them with, but I can't get it work with either.

The WD get's detected sometimes with a regular UW cable, but it's random. I tried a LVD cable with active terminator and it gets detected normally, but I can't do anything with the drive. I went into BIOS of the controller card, and the drive shows up, but if I try and verify disk media or format the drive, I get an unexpected SCSI command failure with some hex code.

The IBM drive has a similar problem, but it's a little different. It gets detected normally no matter what I seem to use (I guess it's because there is a passive terminator jumper on the drive), but I get a "wide negotiation failed" message. I turned off wide negotiation in the SCSI BIOS, but then I get the same problem basically as the WD. I get the unexpected SCSI command failure message in the SCSI BIOS.

Are both these drives messed up? Because I've hooked up tons of things before and never have I had this many problems.

Is it listed in device manager? Did you install the drivers for the SCSI controller in windows?

Have you configured the controller card? Set jumpers on the drive for scsi id? Define "detected at startup".

I'll have to check if it shows up in device manager when I get home, but I don't think it does.

I didn't install any drivers or configure the card or anything. I had 3 HD's, a CDRW, and a scanner hooked up to the card before and everything was fine. What would I need to do to configure it properly? It's an Adaptec 2940UW

run add/remove hardware, this will scan your computer for changes, it probably won't detect the drive, but it should show up after that in disk management.

I changed the original message after I tried a second drive I received and had similar problems.

You should check the specifications for your drives and card on the manufacturers website. It's been awhile since I worked with an Adaptec 2940xx card, but I don't believe it can use LVD drives. To get them to work, you may have to set a jumper on the drive to force SE (single-ended) operation. You won't get the throughput of U160 but they will work correctly; unless something is wrong with the drive or drive controller.

malik,

The 2940U2W card should handle the LVD drive but only if you use the connector closest to the mountplate of the card (mount screw point). The other connector will not handle LVD drives and NONE of them cam handle U160 drives (IIRC).

Or just grab a $35 LSI Logic Ultra160 card and be done with it :)
