I wasn't sure which forum this should go in so if you want to move it to the appropriate one, please do.

Let me give you a little history of the problems I've been having and maybe you'll see something I've missed.

1) The first problem is that my computer only boots up on every other try. I can't figure this one out at all and it doesn't seem to be related to any of the other problems I've been having so any ideas would be helpful. My problem sounds similar to the one here titled "Monitor stays dark" , cause the light comes on for the CPU, but the monitor won't come on and the keyboard does not light up.

2) The rest of the problems started when my sister brought me a movie on CD to watch. I had to upgrade to Windows Media Player version 9 in order to watch it and everything went fine. Then I tried to burn the movie to CD using my Iomega Zip CD 650 burner and Easy CD Creator version 4 software. The CD burner froze up with the CD inside which would not eject and I had to unplug it to stop it and get the CD out. Things worked pretty well after that, but I did notice some minor problems and instability afterwards.

3) Next problem - I have been using AdAware forever with no problems, but now I start getting "Illegal Operation" message when I try to do deep scan and have to shut it down. I uninstalled AdAware and downloaded and installed it again, but the same problem kept occuring. I now have now removed it and do not have a similar program installed, but would like one.

4) Next problem - I had to upgrade from AVG 6 to AVG 7 because they were no longer supporting 6 and when I tried to restart after the installation my computer froze up and would only start in Safe Mode. I uninstalled AVG 7 and everything seemed to be OK, so I downloaded and installed it again and the same problem happened again except that after I uninstalled AVG 7 Windows would still only load in Safe Mode. If I tried to start it in normal mode it would either just freeze up or it would shut itself down. The message I got from time to time was "While initializing device CONFIGMG: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer." and then just "Windows Protection Error. Restart your computer."

After much research and fooling around with tools and files and troubleshooting and resetting, it finally rebooted and loaded Windows, but I'm not sure whether everything is alright now or some problems and instability will resurface. The only thing I can think of that I did to help was to remove every mention of AVG and Grisoft I could find anywhere and constant resetting to clean it out. I then went researching to see if I could find out what had happened and here is what I have found so far.

1) Any version of Windows Media Player above 7 is incompatible with Easy CD Creator 4. Also the new version of MusicMatch is not compatible with Easy CD Creator 4 and I have the new version and had been using the older version to download music and burn CDs. I have not tried the new version though. I am assuming it would not be wise to do so.

2) On the LavaSoft forums I found a person having the same problem with AdAware that I was experiencing and they were given a link to a site to download 2 dlls that they were missing that I found that I was missing too. I think it was richedit 20 and richedit 32. My question is that after using AdAware for so long, how did those dlls disappear. I thought about downloading them from the site but I hesitate for a few reasons; I don't like downloading anything from a site I don't know and this site had a pop-up (that's why I didn't put the link here) to something about "SuperGirls" and then the site itself had all kinds of ads to erotic if not porn sites. So I'm not sure what I can do to be able to use AdAware again or if I'm going to have to find a substitute.

3) I found through another message board that there is a problem between AVG 7 and Roxio drivers. Since I'm using an Iomega (Roxio) CD burner and their Easy CD Creator 4 software, I figured that was the problem with AVG 7. Roxio had an update to fix the problem and I downloaded it, but when I clicked on it to install it, I get the message: "The Cdr4 layer has not been detected." and so it will not update. I am figuring that this has to do with the fact that I am using version 4 of Easy CD Creator and Roxio no longer supports it on their site. One thing though, it says that this is a fix for XP and I am using W98SE, but again that probably has to do with their newest version Easy CD Creator 7 being for XP. Does that mean that if I upgrade to a version of Easy CD Creator compatible with W98SE that the update utility still will not work?

It seems to me that my biggest problem is my CD burning software and it's incompatibility with Windows Media Player 9 and MusicMatch and AVG 7, so here's the main question and forgive my ignorance, but I don't have a lot of experience with upgrading software or adding hardware:

Can I just buy or download a new CD burning software and will it work with my CD burner (Iomega Zip CD 650) and will that fix the problems, or will I still have problems because the CD burner is an Iomega (Roxio) brand which is causing all the incompatibility with drivers etc. or is that just the software?

That is my biggest problem though I'd still like to be able to fix the problem with AdAware and with the computer only booting up on every other try.

I know this has been a long one and I really appreciate anyone who has taken the time to read through the whole mess in order to try to help me out.

Here's a nice solution:

1) time to upgrade from Windows98 to WindowsXP.

Format the hard drive, install XP and take advantage of the stability XP gives over
98 and ME. You'll have to do it eventually anyways :)

daveybrat, I know I'll have to do it eventually, but now is not a good time. I have a lot of old programs that I use for work that won't work with XP. It would take a lot of time and money to make the change, neither of which I have an abundance of right now. I just need a fairly quick and simple change to get me through until my current projects are done.

Easy cd creator sucks. Try finding a free burning program until you can ugprade to XP.

98 is old and very outdated. Thats the simple unfortunate truth.

amdskip, do you know any good free software programs that would work with my CD burner and Windows 98 SE?

I am still using win98se too, and am resisting the change to xp.

As you have noticed, the following programs can be a problem with win98se and should be removed if possible; Media Player above 7x, EZCD creator, MusicMatch, and I'm sure there are others. You may want to make EZCD the last thing to remove only if you can't make it work again

You will find no updates for EZCD 4 . That was by Adaptec who sold to Roxio who sold to Sonic.

My solutions to this were as follows; 1 Media player ... instead of updating it I got another player such as Divx Player or VLC Player or do not watch that movie , 2 EZCD Creator ... I got Nero 5 and have not upgraded to 6 .. caution.. before you remove EZCD make SURE that any cdr backups you have are NOT udf format as no other program will read them (copy them while you can to the more compatable data or audio format), 3 Music Match ... I have stayed with Winamp 2.8 as a player for mp3.

I use AVG 7 and suspect some Malware is closing it. Try the usual repairs, that is CWS killer , spybot search and destroy and so on. The complete malware guide is at http://www.schadentech.com/Malware/removal.htm

Antivir is another free a/v software to try if avg will not run.

Finally, you can get a rollup of win98se ver 1.6.2 updates at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
that contains some aspi and usb updates in case Media player intefered with the aspi layer.

I would suspect EasyCD/DirectCD first and remove that. For a freebie, there is CDBurnerXP Pro. On the other hand, I believe WMP9 should be fine. To replace AVG, there is Avast and AntiVir. Avast is bulkier, but the update definitions are smaller. Anti-Vir makes you download about 4MB each time. For spyware, there is always Spybot Search & Destroy although both this an Ad-Aware do not impress me.
