Problems with Promise controller card or bad HD ?

It is the Ultra100 TX2. I have just a sinlge HD ( new maxtor 60gb) connected to the card. The hd mode is cable select.

Anyway, I do a fresh installation of XP onto my old 40gb Maxtor ( is on the on-boad IDE ). Everything works fine. I did not install the drivers for the controller card during XP installtion as I didn't need the 60gb hd at the time. Anyway, boot into windows, and XP installs the drivers and i see the unformatted HD in My computer. I reboot back in dos and do fdisk. Go to create a partition on the drive and it only has NTFS. SO I go back to Windows and use Partition Magic 7.0.. to format and create a FAT32 partition. I restart and it doesn't see the HD. But than I shut down and boot up windows and it sees it perfect. K I have 60 gb free space now. I also flashed the controller card bios to the newest one...

I start moving Music and My Documents over, around 4-5 gb. Everything is moved fine. I go to bed and woke up this morning and there are errors saying, can't write to drive.. blah errrors. I had to restart and now when I boot up in Windows, My Computer sees the drive as a Unformatted dive and so does Partition Magic .. WTF

In the event viewer, the driver for the card had a system time out failure.... The card is on IRQ 10 and it is by itself. During installtion of XP, I chose standard PC.

I did have the drivers installed off the provided floppy, i removed those and now running the drivers that XP has.

OK now, I re-format and create a fat32 partition ( using Partition Manager). Restart and the HD is not seen. I use a program called "bootitng" from download.com. It formats and creates a Fat-32 partition. I go to windows and the HD is seen fine. I shut down and restart back into windows. The HD is not seen. Not in partition magic or in my computer. I have also used FDISK to create a Primary Fat-32 partition on the drive. I go into windows and it doesn't see the HD either.

arrghh

What is going on ? Pls HELP

BTW, during bootup...the HD is picked up but is not being seen in Windows XP Pro.

Thanks

Try simply putting the 60GB drive on the onboard connector and see if you have the same problems. If you do, the Promise card would seem to be the culprit. Otherwise, I would think the harddrive is giving you grief. Don't use Partition Magic!

MY guess is that you need to install the drivers for the promise card during the XP install.

I have a promise card (ATA 66) and installed the drivers for it during my XP Pro install, and it works fine for me.....

BTW: I also have a Promise ATA 133 card I tryed to install AFTER my XP install (replacing the ATA 66 card) and it caused me grief (BSOD) so I think XP REALLY REALLY wants those drivers during the install.....

hmm, when I installed xp, the promise drivers were already included in xp so no third party drivers were needed.
btw this is an ultra 100 card
