I am leaning towards software issues as I have generally messed up my install of XP bad enough to warrant a reformat.
However, I am trying to rule out HW problems.
My Plextor 708A:
Will read CD-ROMS / DVD-ROMS. No problems with SW installtion / DVD playback / etc.
Will not play audio CDs (using Windows Media Player).
Will burn succesfully to CD. (Data)
Will burn small files succesfully to DVD.
Consistently fails at burning large files / large number of files to DVD.
Do you guys agree that I can probably rule out HW problems? Kind of a catch 22 situation for me as I would like to back up some data to DVD prior to reformatting, but the process fails and I have already thrown away quite a few coasters.
Update... 18 hours later...
Updated firmware and updated drivers in device manager.
I was looking at the burners properties in Device Manager and noticed that the driver information looked wrong. Wrong as in no date, no version, unsigned.
I clicked Update Driver and bingo, Windows relaoded the native XP drivers.
Just burned 4 GB and no problems. On to do more testing.
Thanks to all!
