Recently install a newer game for my parents on their computer. Video card was a Radeon 7000 agp. Game wouldn't run, crashes with a 'generic error'.

I upgrade their video card to a ATI Radeon X800 and still the same issue. I run dxdiag and it fails the Direct3D tests.

D3D7 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
D3D8 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
D3D9 Test Result: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

I've tried reinstalling chipset drivers, graphics drivers, even reinstalled windows xp and I still get these errors.

So I don't think its a software issue and its not the video card (was working fine in a friends computer before it was pulled).

Motherboard, psu?

Specs are:
AMD Athlon XP-M 2600
Shuttle AN35N Ultra
768mb ddr
Radeon X800 256mb

Figures right when I finally post here I find what the issue is lol.

After hours of digging through forum posts across the internets I have found the issue many others seem to have.

At least with ATI.. any driver over 7.7 causes issues with some AGP cards. Installed 7.7 and D3D works perfectly.

This has been happening for a while so I guess ATI isn't looking to fix it.
