Problems with OPTICAL drives

I have a big problem everytime I try to install a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Ok, I built my own PC, the main parts consist of an Asus CUSL2 i815e motherboard, an Intel 866MHZ CPU, SB Live! X-Gamer and a Pioneer DVD 16x [if you need to know anything else, just ask =]. Now, my hard drive is Primary Master and it works fine. My DVD drive is Secondary Master. Everything is configured right; IDE cables; jumpers and CMOS/BIOS detects it.

When I use my System Disk to boot up and once I arrive to the menu where it gives me three options, I select #1; Start computer with CD-ROM support. My disk is still the floppy drive in and it always freezes, the last line that it displays says: Detect MSCD001. So at this point, I'm guessing there isn't any drivers for it, with the help of my friend, we tried about 3 different drivers for it but never worked. I also played the renaming game where you have to rename some lines in AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS, but that never worked out. Either I did it wrong, got bad drivers or that's not the problem.

I took my CD-ROM drive off my old PC and tried that, but that doesn't work either. My friend found a FAQ with my exact problem that I have:

http://www.deltaca.com/cdrom/faq_r.htm#q4

Question 4 and 5, the only thing is that's for CD-ROM and I'd rather get the DVD-ROM drive working, but any which one of them will do.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would really appreciate since my garantees on a few parts are running out and have to test to know if they work or not. Thanks.

How patient are you? When it's hanging it may simply be trying to detect your CD-ROM, which can take a while.

I tried leaving it there for a while. Also, I installed my new HD to my old computer and installed Windows on it then moved it back. I booted up and Windows didn't even detect any CD-ROM or DVD-ROM.
