My PC spec here: http://www.mikeymike.org.uk/mikes/mypc.txt
The Samsung drive hasn't ever worked 100% for me (yes, it has the latest firmware). Initially it wouldn't read some of my older DVD-Rs, even though other drives could without any problems (Nero CDspeed showing no errors on the discs).
More recently however it has acquired the bizarre habit of becoming non-responsive immediately after attempting to play a DVD Video disc in any program (I normally use VLC but I've tried others). It becomes so badly non-responsive that the system can't talk to the drive properly any more (I've tried everything in software I can think of to attempt to reset it), and so the computer just sits there during shutdown (it doesn't hang, the animation continues, but I've tried leaving it for more than 5 minutes). If I just do a restart (ie. use the reset button), Windows again sits on the loading screen for ages. Apparently only switching the system off and on again gets the drive to talk again.
Otherwise that drive works fine.
The LiteON has more recently (than the Samsung's DVD playback issue) decided that it won't read any DVD discs at all, but will read CDs. It doesn't act up in the same way as the Samsung thankfully, but putting in a DVD disc results in a very short seek and then nothing. The system claims no disc has been inserted. I've tried using a CD lens cleaner but it didn't make any difference.
I don't really need two drives, an odd set of circumstances resulted in the second drive's installation. I also have an old USB DVDRW drive that doesn't have any problems reading any type of disc, which is my current fallback option.
I plan to simply replace two drives with the model of Pioneer drive that I've been recently using for customers' computer builds, unless anyone has any clever ideas for fixing these problems.
I don't have any software installed that does clever things with optical drives, and Windows doesn't have any UpperFilters/LowerFilters registry settings for optical drives. Removing the drives from Device Manager and redetecting them works but doesn't fix any problems.
