Problems with new system

I just put together a new system - Athlon 3200+ 64 bit on a DFI Ut250 ( only overclocked to 2100mhz so far ). I have 1 gig of kingston bh-5 memory that's running 210fsb 2-2-2-5 timings. 9800 pro 128mb at stock speeds along with a 2 cd drives, 2 harddrives, and an Audigy 2. I'm running this all on a 530 watt Sparkle PSU.

When I'm playing Wolfenstein Enemy Terroritory about every 5 minutes I lockup for about 5-6 seconds and I hear the last audio file being repeated and cut off again and again. After the 5 or 6 second lock up the game goes back to playing normally but it locks up again in 5 minutes and does the same thing.

Does anyone know what's happening or what settings I need to change?

I didn't specifically have any EAX settings checked off but what you said did remind me to download and update EAX drivers to see if that will fix my problem. I'll go test it and then edit this message with the result.

The first thing I see that you need to do is to change your memory's TRCD from 2 to 3. AMD 64's on-chip memory controller is supposed to be slightly unstable at 2-2-2. 2-3-2-10 is supposed to work best.

I've seen those pauses you're talking about happen with a few games, and there were a couple of different causes. Certain recent ATI video drivers caused this in OpenGL games, especially in Quake III. I had a real problem with three different drivers. The last few drivers don't have this problem. Catalyst 4.9 is the best I've used yet. I tried the new 4.10 yesterday on my second machine, and it crashed repeatedly in Soldier of Fortune II multiplayer. I know somebody who got the pauses when they left their motherboard's hardware monitor running while gaming.

I've seen many people speculate that Punk Buster causes this sometimes, but I think they're just speculating because PB does cause short pauses at the beginning of a game. The pausing problems you're describing are like the ones I had, and they were'nt caused by PB.

I also know someone who had really bad pauses with an MSI nForce3 250 board and 9800 Pro, in several games. I remember that he said he was in a discussion with others having the same problem.

I had a problem with my Audigy 2 sharing IRQ a while back, and moved it to another slot. I can't remember what problem it caused, but I do remember that changing IRQ's fixed it.

I did change try to install the EAX driver update and only one of the two updates worked - the second one claimed that I didn't have anything installed. I'll try moving my soundcard over to another slot later and see if this fixes it.

I'm using 4.9 or 4.10 I beleive. I don't have MBM running. I will try to change my TRCD to 3 as well.

Thank you for your post loaf - alot of information that should solve my problem. I'll get back shortly and see if my situation has been changed.

I moved my soundcard to another slot, changed TRCD to 3, and tried installing EAX. I have the same problem still.

I am using 4.10 Catalysts and I will try using 4.9. Does anyone have a link to 4.9's? What is the correct way to go about uninstalling video drivers when putting a different version in?

ati says use XP w/sp2 with their 4.10s according to this once on that page at bottom..link to previous versions..gl 🙂

I have SP2 installed. Thanks for the link. I had 4.9 installed actually and I switched over to the newer 4.10 and I have no problems now. Thanks guys.

Alright I have new problems now. It no longer jolts but after about 10 minutes of play the computer will lock up and I can't ctrl alt delete or anything. It's like a hard lock up and I have to turn the computer off and restart it.

I reverted back to a fresh install of 4.9's - I'll see if it goes fine.
