Problems with new system

I just put together my new system with an xp1700, abit nf7 and 2 sticks of 256mb pc2700 ddr. when i boot it, it will not find any IDE drives but instead it stalls at "Detecting IDE drives". The memory check is fine.

When I leave all IDE devices disconnected from the cable (but still have a cable attached to the motherboard's IDE1 port), it will go past "detecting IDE drives" saying no devices were found. This leads me to believe that there is some conflict with my IDE devices.

However, all of my IDE devices have been in perfect working order in my previous system (Abit KT7/tbird 900), so they are not broken, it is just some incompatibility apparently. Does anybody have suggestions on how to resolve this problem?

My IDE devices are:

Western Digital 120GB eide
asus 50x cdrom drive
liteon 32x12x40x cdrw
IBM deathstar 75gxp 45GB

PS: I have tried 2 different IDE cables, including the one included with the motherboard. Both gave the same results I described above.

I've fixed it by removing the jumper from my WD 120GB... not sure exactly why this is a solution, but it is. The jumper is still on the slave drive for IDE1, the asus 50x.
