a reboot will fix it temporarily. reinstalled drivers and it was no help. i have my old card back in now.

i assume i'm going to need to return it?

Not normal at all. What motherboard are you using? What drivers? Exactly which MSI card (the nice heatsink OC version)?

msi 8800 gt
gigabyte ga-p35-ds3l
169.21 drivers

my 8800 gts 320 is running idle at 54 C. is that normal? i remember the 8800 gt 512 was running at that at load.

thats odd, chief value (where i ordered the card from) doesn't even list it any more.

That is odd. If reinstalling the driver doesnt help, i guess just RMA it. My card runs at a cool 35C and havent had any similar problems like you mentioned.

Sounds like you received a bad one. I would RMA it (regardless of what Chiefvalue has one site). CV and Newegg are one and the same and they should be able to get you a new one. If not, reimburse your money and I would fight for shipping too. Good luck! :)

I also got one of those cards, and mine was bad as well. Not quite as messed up as yours, though. There was something wrong with the memory, and in some games textures would randomly corrupt and in others the game would freeze up after a certain amount of stress. Testing with ATITool demonstrated that lowering the memory clock from the default would end the problem, which confirmed that the memory was no good. So, I sent the card back to chiefvalue and ordered an 8800GTS that's on its way now.

emailed Chief Value to see if they can replace it. They don't have ANY 8800 GTs on their site any more. Think I'll have to go through MSI?

I think that CV will be able to take care of you (assuming you didn't buy it over 30 days ago or whatever their return/RMA period is). Newegg still has them listed so that means that CV "should" have access to them regardless if they sell them on site or not.

shoot, I wonder if those are on the 6 layer pcb's? Maybe I shouldn't have been touting them as the superstars of the video card world lately...

There's always a bad board or two. The card received 89% 5-star ratings (97% at 4 stars or higher) on Newegg for a reason. I would guess pontifex just had bad luck. Hopefully, the people who have the bad ones didn't receive them because someone ordered one, overclocked the living hell out of it, killed it and then returned it to CV to see again as "NEW".
