I just installed a new ECS KM400-M2 motherboard on my old computer, and everything went without a hitch, until i booted up for the first time. i went through the bios and made sure everything was right, but as windows was booting up - when only the background was showing, before the gui loaded - the computer just turned off. i tried again several times, including starting in safe mode, but it always turns off at the same point.

heres the specs:

ecs km400-m2
athlon t-bird 1.33ghz
512mb ddr (pc2100 - 133mhz)
onboard video & sound
300w sparkle PSU

any clues as to what my problem is?

Hmm. I've never heard of anything like this. Have you tried reformatting and reinstalling windows? Anyhow, here's a bump for you.

Yeah sounds like you need a format. Try reinstalling the old hardware, backing up the files to another PC, a flash drive, MP3 player, whatever you have around, then reinstall and format the drive.

Why not boot from a Linux Live-CD distro Knoppix is popular since its fully equipped with tons of programs and back it up that way and then you can format.

ok, i backed up all the stuff (by just hooking up the hard drive to my other computer), but when i boot off of the windows xp install cd, i get the same problem. it loads up all the drivers, but when i get to the first menu asking about installing, repairing, etc. the computer turns off. it doesn't just lose power, it seems like it makes the same noises as when it performs a shutdown. what the hell is wrong with it?

that sounds really wierd...
try disableing all onboard stuff in the bios.. network, sound, raid, extra stuff... if you can... and see if its some wierd issue with an onboard compoent... if it isn't i'd say an RMA will be in order

no dice.... here's what happens - when it finishes loading the drivers at the winxp setup, the keyboard leds flash once, the light on my usb mouse turns off then on, then the screen turns off and on, and the screen changes to the first menu. then i hear the sound of my cd-rom drives turning off, then the computer turns off. its the same thing i see when i perform a shutdown from windows. if i cant get this crap working tonight, im gonna rma tomorrow.
