Problems with new GeForce 6600GT

Ichinisan

Lifer
I haven't had a chance to play any games yet (never any time for that anymore), but I noticed some horrible speckles during the first dxdiag Direct3d test (DX7). What might be causing this? I am not overclocking, but it's a tight squeeze to get it all into my XPC. Is there any way to read and know for sure if the card is getting hot or has insufficient power?

Specs:
Shuttle XPC SN45G (NForce2 Ultra400+SoundStorm) barebones system (case/motherboard/PSU), upgraded to 250W
AMD Athlon XP (mobile Barton) 2500(?) CPU
Kingston HyperX 512MB DDR400 memory
PNY GeForce 6600 GT AGP video card
Hauppauge WinTV PVR-250 PCI TV tuner
Sony DRU-710A DVD+/-RW DL optical drive
combination 3.5" USB media reader/floppy disk drive with internal USB connector
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with USB remote control kit

Does that card have a power connector? Did you attach it?

Was your previous card nvidia or ATI based?

Do you have any other computers you can try the 6600 in?

Heat, power, drivers, and defective card are all possible.

Pwr is connected
Previous card was NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti4200 AGP8x
Latest Detonator drivers

It's a pain in the butt to move anything around in these systems. The other computer is a file server with 7 hard drives, but things will be easier when I move it all into my new Cooler Master CMStacker case.

I don't know about the PNY but mine has temp monitoring in the display properties. These AGP 6600GTs do tend to run hot and having it in that little SFF could possibly be causing it to overheat. Remove the alu cover and see if it still artifacts. Try some 3D tests aquamark3, 3Dmock, that sort of thing, and see if they show issues.

I assume you upgraded to the 250 XPC silent power supply? That should be enough power for everything, people are running X800 XTs and 6800 GTs with them. I'd try pulling the TV tuner to see though. If it still has problems, then it's either cooling or a bad card.

I've tried with the optical drive, tv tuner, and media/floppy drive removed and it still shows the speckles and spots during the first DirectX test. I had already tried with the cover removed and it was the same way. The video HSF feels cool, which I know can mean that it's not making good contact with the GPU. However, I still don't think that heat is the problem because it still happens after a cold boot in a chilly room.

What is so specific about the first DXdiag test that does not affect the other tests?

I don't know whether to return the card or the Shuttle XPC barebones. There are several inconsistencies that I am experiencing with the board. For instance, I keep having an issue with USB devices. My remote receiver skips two channels at a time and has several other issues until I remove and reinsert the connector, and my wireless mouse/keyboard has issues, though it may be interference.

Does the BFG OC version of this card come with two DVI adapters, S-Video cable, and an NVIDIA component output cable as this one did?
