problems with network between Win2k and Win98SE

I have two computers networked using a crossover cable. One runs Win2k, and the other runs Win98SE. The Win2k machine can access the Win98 machine's files but it takes about half a minute for the shared folders to load up. The Win98 machine can't access the Win2k machine's files at all. It prompts for a password even though I never set any passwords. Does anyone know how to fix these problems? Thanks a lot.

Log in to w2k with a User name that has been set up on w2k. You don't have to set it up with a password, but the user name should be recognized by w2k. And create new shares on the w2k machine and give access to everyone when you create them.

This could be because your are running a 10 base network.

I log into Windows with just my name and no password. The log in dialog box doesn't even pop up, since I'm using Windows Logon and I never set a password. Under "Users and Passwords" in the control panel, my user ID is identified as an administrator.
Also, I have the network set as 100Mbps full duplex, and the benchmarks in SiSoft show that it's working at 100Mbps full duplex. I was running Win98SE just a week ago and the network worked perfectly. After upgrading to Windows 2000, these problems started showing up. Thanks.

Unfortunately this is normal. There's an article in the MS Knowledge Base describing this symptom. There is no work-around. The Win2k machine is checking to see if there are any scheduled tasks on the Win98 box. Why? I have no idea, but that's what MS says....

To log onto the Win2k box from any other machine on the network, you have to have an appropriate user account set up on the Win2k machine. Or else enable the "Guest" account (it's disabled by default), then anyone can access that machine.

Try setting Win98 up to use Client for Microsoft Networks logon, and use a login/password that has been set up in Win2k that could access those shared files (granted permission when created the shared files). But first you need to setup such User login/password on Win2K and assign it to like Power User group of even Administrator group.

Just found this registry hack to eliminate that annoying delay when browsing shared folders on Win98 from Win2k:

Step 1. In Windows 2000, click Start, Run, type
regedt32, and click OK.

Step 2. In the Registry Editor, navigate to the
following branch:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current
Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace.

Step 3. Under that branch, select the key
{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}. This key
instructs Windows Explorer to search for Scheduled
Tasks. If you wish, pull down the Registry menu and
click Save Key to back up this value. Name the output
file, say, Scheduled.reg, and you can easily restore
the key if necessary.

Step 4. Delete the key and close the Registry Editor.

This change takes effect immediately and doesn't
require a reboot, so you can determine how much it
speeds up the process.

I also have the Win98SE machine asking for a password to access the Win2k machine. How do I re-enable Guest?

Update:
Nevermind guys, I found it

Workin', I don't think the registry hack sped things up much (maybe it did and I just can't tell). It's still pretty slow compared to a Win98 to Win98 network. Thanks anyways though. I guess I'll just have to wait those few extra seconds.

igowerf - hmmm, that's odd. Mine went from taking about 28 seconds to list the shares to being nearly instantaneous, just from that one registry change on the Win2k machine. It seems actually faster than Win98 to Win98.

Now if I could just figure out why file transfers to my Win2k laptop are so damn slow......

Workin', I got it working (no pun intended). regedt32 confused me I guess, because I'm using to using regedit, and I didn't actually delete the key. I deleted the value stored in the key. Thanks a lot for the tip. There's a LAN party coming up this weekend...

LOL, I wish that was my registry hacking skills. I copied that down some time ago out of a magazine article. But it's still quite useful.
