Problems with NEC ND-3500AG

I have a NEC ND-3500AG and even with good 8x media, I can't burn it any faster than approx 6x. It's set to DMA, the media is genuine ritek g05. Also, when burning, every 3-5min, the burner buffer drops to 5-7%, but the hard drive buffer stays at 100%. This happens with both nero and dvddecrpter, and on two different machines. Any thoughts?
 
updated to latest firmware?

i have 3500 and ritek media too. I use Decrypter for movies and nero for data, they both work fine for me.
